I would recommend “An Introduction to Japanese Linguistics” by Natsuko Tsujimura.

You mean that “Taroo drowned in the river” does not imply “Taroo died??”

  Perhaps, depending on the context, a better translation would be “Taroo was drowning in the river”. If you want to make sure that he really died, you could say “Taroo ga kawa-de oborezinda”.
